Racing with your own kart? Fantastic idea! But where do you start? In this blog post, we'll explain everything you need to race with your own kart . From the right equipment to transportation, maintenance, and spare parts, we've clearly laid out everything for you.
1. The kart itself
The foundation is, of course, your own kart . These come in different versions, depending on your age, weight, and class (e.g., Mini, Junior, Senior, or Master). When purchasing, pay attention to the frame , engine (such as Rotax Max or Honda 4-stroke), and its state of maintenance . If you're buying a used kart , always have it thoroughly inspected.
2. Personal karting equipment
Good protection is essential. Here's what you need at a minimum:
- Kart overalls : Durable, breathable and specially designed for the karting position.
- Helmet : An approved karting helmet (Snell/FIA approval recommended).
- Gloves : For grip and protection against blisters.
- Kart shoes : With thin sole for optimal pedal feel.
- Neck strap and rib protector : For extra safety in case of impact or stress.
Preferably choose brands such as Sparco , Alpinestars , OMP or Bengio, these combine comfort, safety and durability.
3. Pit cart or kart stand
A pit cart (also called a kart stand ) is used to easily move the kart around the paddock. They are available as simple stands, but also in deluxe versions with a winch or battery lift. See our blog about pit carts for the differences.
4. Tools and parts
Karting means tinkering . Make sure you have a good tool kit with, among other things:
- Socket wrenches, Allen keys, torque wrench
- Tire mounting tools
- Coupling or chain tools
- Measuring cups, funnels and fuel hose
And think of a stock of:
- Oil (engine & chain)
- Lubricants and brake fluid
- Spare parts such as spark plugs, chain, sprockets, bolts, cables
5. Tires and rims
Depending on the season, you'll need slicks (dry weather) or rain tires . Also, make sure you have a spare set of rims and a tire pressure gauge or pump .
6. Means of transport
Of course, your kart has to go to and from the circuit:
- Bus or trailer : Most drivers use an enclosed trailer or van.
- Loading ramps or loading ramps : For loading and unloading.
- Also don't forget: bring fuel, jerry cans and spare tires!
7. Maintenance and care
To enjoy your kart for a long time, regular maintenance is crucial:
- Clean the kart after each use
- Change oil on time
- Check bolts, chain and brakes
